Sample Size Calculations for Mixed Models

Determining appropriate sample sizes for experiments can be a challenge, especially when the anticipated statistical analysis includes mixed-effects (also known as heirarchical) models. In this hands-on workshop, we will discuss the goals of sample size and power calculations in mixed-effects models, and how to use simulations to perform them. This method allows for understanding the effect of sample sizes at each level of a mixed model, and how they affect power. Examples of simulation for mixed models will be done in R using both the simr R package and using the jamovi statistical software.
